All week we kept a close eye on various weather forecasts.  The weather didn’t look all that promising, but it looked like we would have some time to hunt plants, so we stuck to our plans and on Friday, Gail, Rusell and I travelled westwards towards Garcia’s Pass. As we approached Riversdale we decided to head straight for the Pass to see what we could find before the bad weather arrived.  We drove over the Pass and turned east along the dirt road, stopping whenever we saw something interesting to fossick on the road verge.  It drizzled on and off.

This AGM was different to the usual boring affair. The Gouritz Biosphere AGM at Mossel Bay was well worth the travelling. The speakers were brilliant, the AGM part went by in a flash and the day ended with a visit to the Diosma aristata Reserve to the east of Pinnacle Point with AnneLise Vlok. You don’t get it much better than that.

“That Bloody Old Bitch”, and no, I wasn’t talking about me.  The Buchu Bus has been up to her shenanigans again.  I was joining a group from WESSA to do an exploratory trip to Gamkaberg and the Rooiberg Pass, in preparation for a Geology/Fossil/ Plant trip at the end of August.

On Friday September 11th 2015 there was a plan for the Outramps to do a follow-up on a previous visit to a property in the Robberg Coastal Corridor, but I called it off as it was pouring with rain and predicted to do so until the early afternoon (it did stop at about 11.30).   Arrangements were made with Hazel Jonker to visit her property, Kapteinskloof, on September 18th.

Despite fairly vigorous harvesting, the Honey Teabush is holding its own in that situation.  Lower down on private land, a lot of the plants have been cut so extensively, that they have died.  It is a case of “killing the goose that lays the golden eggs” and another example of the greed and stupidity of man.  Despite this, the trip was a triumphant celebration of the rares that abound there.

The fearsome Spaghetti Pass is the gateway into Gamkaskloof or Die Hel, which is an isolated valley contained within the high mountains of the magnificent Swartberg range.  In my case, “Familiarity breeds Contempt” does not apply.
